Sun Damage and Age Spots

Sun Damage and Age Spots

We all know that too much time in the sun without sunscreen or other forms of sun protection can result in skin cancer. Excessive time in the sun can also cause damage to the skin, which can increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and create age spots. Nuance Aesthetics offers several skin rejuvenation treatments that can help correct sun damage and reduce the appearance of age spots.

What are the effects of sun damage?

Excessive exposure to the sun’s UV rays can contribute to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, and actinic keratosis. Your risk of sun damage can be lowered by using “broad spectrum” sun protection and wearing clothing that limits your skin’s exposure to the sun. Sun damage can cause premature aging because UV exposure damages elastin and collagen and can cause the skin to lose its elasticity. Sun damage can also result in uneven skin tone, freckles, and age spots, also known as solar lentigines.

What are age spots?

Age spots are brown, gray, red, or black spots that appear on the areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to the sun and are the result of the overproduction of melanin in the skin. Age spots commonly appear on the face, back of the hands, shoulders, forearms, and upper back and will have the same texture as the rest of your skin. Men and women over the age of 40, those with fair skin, and those who spend excessive amounts of time exposed to ultraviolet rays have a higher risk of developing age spots.

What can be used to treat sun damage and age spots?

There are several treatment options that can be used to correct sun damage and reduce the appearance of age spots. At Nuance Aesthetics, we offer chemical peels to help improve the effects of sun damage and reduce the appearance of age spots.

Chemical Peels

At Nuance Aesthetics, we use chemical peels created by SkinMedica®. Chemical peels are administered by applying a medicated solution to the skin and allowing it to soak in and absorb for a specific amount of time. The solution is neutralized and over the next several days the treated skin will begin to peel and flake off to reveal the healthy, undamaged skin below.
