What causes uneven skin tone?

Uneven skin tone, also known as hyperpigmentation, is caused by the excess of melanin in the skin. The body typically over produces melanin in response to excessive sun exposure in order to protect your skin from UV rays. There are multiple reasons uneven skin tone can occur, including sun exposure, environmental pollution, hormones, and discoloration caused by acne scarring.

You can reduce your risk of hyperpigmentation by regularly using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to decrease your exposure to UV rays and by incorporating regular exfoliation into your skin care routine. Exfoliating the skin removes the dead cells and allows topical treatments, like serums and moisturizers, to penetrate the skin better.

What is melasma?

Melasma is a chronic skin condition that develops slowly and results in dark patches on the skin. Melasma is a common occurrence during pregnancy and is often referred to as the mask of pregnancy. The increase of hormones in the body during pregnancy causes an increase in pigmentation levels, which can result in melasma. Melasma resulting from pregnancy is usually a temporary condition and generally disappears a few months after the baby is born. Melasma that is not a result of pregnancy is a chronic condition and may never fully clear, but can be reduced with the appropriate treatment.

What treatments can be used to improve uneven skin tone and melasma?

At Nuance Aesthetics, we offer light laser facials and chemical peels as treatment options to help improve overall skin tone and reduce the appearance of melasma. Patients can reduce their risk of both of these skin conditions by using appropriate sun protection and limiting their exposure to UV rays.

Light Laser Facials

This skin rejuvenation treatment uses controlled laser energy to target pigmented imperfections and remove them from the skin. This treatment stimulates the skin’s natural healing response and improves the overall tone and texture of the skin.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels rejuvenate the skin by using a medicated solution to remove the surface layer of the skin and reveal the healthy, radiant skin underneath.
