What Causes Sagging Skin and How do You Remedy it?

Dermal Fillers Treatment Areas - Nuance Aesthetics in Salt Lake City, Utah

As we get older, skin loses elasticity, connective tissues and muscles deteriorate and sag. The loss of volume, radiance, and elasticity all-cause facial skin to start looking older. By the time you are 40, you probably will experience a loss of volume, sagging contours, and deepening wrinkles.

The way you age is partly due to your genetics, environment and lifestyle factors. All of these factors cause a slowdown in key processes and functions in the skin. Slowing down of collagen and elastin production causes the most visible signs of aging and brings on lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, and a loss of volume and facial contours.

It can be difficult to pinpoint the first loss of volume and facial contours, but the first signs of a loss of volume come in the lips when lipstick starts to bleed. Next, you may see a loss of facial volume that results in sagging skin, a flattening of cheeks, and the appearance of “turkey neck.”

The overall appearance of your face looks sad, tired, or old. You may also notice a fold that develops between the nose and mouth, known as the nasolabial fold, which is also linked to a loss of facial volume.

When you look at your face and are deciding on facial volume treatment in SLC, Utah, look to the “triangle of beauty” that shows how a loss of volume changing the shape and structure of your face.

When you are young, even distribution of volume in your facial skin helps you look attractive. The main features of a younger-looking face are high cheekbones, full jowls, smooth skin, and a lean, well-defined jawline. In other words, these features create face shape and structure that is wider at the top, tapering down to the narrowest point at the chin. Your overall look is relaxed and positive.

As you age, loss of volume means the triangle of your face is inverted. You have a wider and slacker jawline, sagging skin that results in less defined facial contours, flatter cheeks, wrinkles on the forehead and brows, corners of your mouth point downwards, and there is the hollowness of the under-eye area and the temples.

The combination of these factors equals an aged appearance. The triangle is turned upside down and the wider area is towards the bottom of the face. Your skin sags and the perception of your face is altered. You look sad, stressed and this leads to mistaken judgments of your mood.
